Participation of Beatrice Favarel to the Legal Days organized by the French Embassy in Malta
On 16 October 2025, Maître FAVAREL took part in the Legal Days dedicated to Maritime Law, organized in Valletta (Malta) under the auspices of the French Embassy in Malta.
This event follows a long-standing tradition of legal conferences addressing major maritime issues, bringing together each year lawyers, academics, and practitioners around key topics of maritime law and international maritime litigation.
During this event, Maître Favarel spoke about (i) the experience of the arrest of ships under international law, within the framework of the 1952 Brussels Convention, and (ii) the issue of abandoned vessels.
The first conference, entitled “The Arrest of Ships in International Law under the Brussels Convention of 10 May 1952 – Experience Feedback”, was held at MEDAC (Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies), University of Malta. It focused on the international regime governing ship arrest and the practical application of the Brussels Convention of 10 May 1952, a founding text in the field of merchant ship arrest.
The second conference, entitled “The Issue of Abandoned Ships”, took place at the Valletta Design Cluster, one of the city’s emblematic cultural centers. It addressed the legal framework applicable to abandoned vessels and maritime wrecks, in particular regarding the owner’s liability, the distinction between abandonment and loss of possession, and the obligations to remove wrecks when they pose a danger to navigation or the environment.
This topic is a continuation of Maître Favarel’s work on case law concerning wreck removal and the implementation of the Law of 24 November 1961 on the Regulation of Maritime Wrecks.
An international partnership – around international law
This maritime conference adopts an international collaborative format, organized in partnership with the Maltese authorities, the French Embassy in Malta, and various academic and legal institutions specializing in international maritime law. It serves as a platform for exchanges among practitioners, judges, academics, and state representatives on the transnational legal challenges of the Law of the Sea.
The participation of Maître Favarel highlights the firm’s commitment to international maritime litigation, maritime arbitration, and international legal cooperation.
The discussions held during this conference directly contribute to the firm’s practice in matters involving ship arrest, international maritime disputes, maritime asset management, and transnational litigation.
Finally, this participation is fully in line with our commitment to international legal cooperation.
